About Us

Welcome to the 3rd Exeter Air Scouts web site.

The 3rd Exeter are a Scout group in Exeter And District, scout district part of the County of Devon, the full name of the group is the 3rd Exeter Air Scout Group, RAF no. 47 (formerly Ladysmith School). We are an active air scout group which is recognised by the RAF, this means that we are actively involved in air activities, and wear a different uniform, we have held this honour for nearly 30 years. The recognition scheme allows us access to facilities provided by the RAF (often via the local ATC squadren).

We now have a new home, after 30 years at Ladysmith school, due to redevelopment of our building, we are now in St James Church Hall, Exeter (we would like to thank St Matthews for being our meeting place for the last few years!). This new location has us closer to the centre of our local catchment area, although as a specialist unit anyone is invited to join from accross Devon. It also allows us easy access to more local facilitities.

The RAF recognition is granted to us by the mod, and is preserved by an inspection at least every 18 months by an officer of the RAF, or the local ATC. The most recent inspections have been conducted by the head of Devon and Somerset Wing ATC, Wing Commander Pope. The group has been recognised since 1983, and an air scout group for over 30 years.

We are one of under 50 RAF recognised scout groups in the UK, and the only one south west of Bristol, this means we are a very individual group. With a program that is unique to the area, including flying, drill, aeronautics related skills, general scouting skills, and much much more. Although we do a limited amount of drill we are NOT a military organisation and therefore this is very limited.

In all sections we accept boys and girls, beaver section from ages 5.5 to 8, cub section from 8 till 10.5, and scout section from ages 10.5 to 14. If you are interested in finding out more, or wish to join or for your child to join please email me at: info@exeterairscouts.org.uk and one of our leaders will get back to you as quickly as possible. We're also associated with the two older sections, Explorers aged 14 to 18 and Scout Network aged 18 to 25.

The Third are one of around 15 scout groups in Exeter (http://scouts-exeter.org.uk/), which is part of the Devon scout county (http://www.devonscouts.org.uk/) yet we are one of only 2 air scout groups in Devon.

The Scout Association is the largest co-educational youth movement in the UK and is a member of the world organisation of the scout movement. The movement was founded in the UK, in 1907 with a trail camp on brownsea island in Dorset. The movement soon grew in popularity, but was originally only for boys, but now and for several years it has been fully co-education, and intends to include everyone in it's exciting activities.
